What is Abdominal Massage?

Abdominal Therapy (sometimes referred to as Maya Abdominal Massage) is the manual manipulation of the muscles, connective tissue (fascia), and ligaments of the abdomen, lower back, and pelvis. Abdominal massage techniques can be useful in treating fertility challenges, pelvic and prostate problems, painful menstruation, digestive issues, and can provide relief from sacral and back pain.

Benefits of Abdominal Massage

From physical conditions such as bloating, muscle tension, and back pain to mental conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress – abdominal massage offers many benefits that support overall well-being.

Common Conditions Treated With Abdominal Massage

Abdominal massage is an effective therapy for a wide variety of health issues, including those that are physical or mental in nature. Many of our patients come in for issues related to fertility, digestion, acute or chronic pain, and anxiety.

We use abdominal therapy for a wide range of symptoms, including:

Abdominal Massage During Pregnancy

A patient and their unborn child’s safety is our priority. Abdominal Therapy can be utilized during the first trimester of pregnancy and when a mother is at full term awaiting the onset of labor. The techniques are significantly modified during pregnancy for the safety of mother and child.

Abdominal Massage for Digestion

Abdominal Therapy gently moves organs of the digestive system into optimal positioning. Proper position of digestive organs can address a number of digestive issues including bloating, constipation, diarrhea, slow transit digestion, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, borborygmus, abdominal pain, and a host of other digestive-related conditions.

Abdominal Massage for Fertility

All patients can benefit from optimal positioning of their reproductive system. Abdominal Therapy can gently reposition organs of the reproductive system for all genders. Ten ligaments hold the uterus in position, and gently massaging the abdomen can lift and guide the uterus into its optimal position. Abdominal Therapy can also address issues of congestion in the ovaries and uterine tubes.

Patients with prostates and testis can also benefit from the improved circulation provided by Abdominal Therapy leading to increased libido, better nerve function, reduction in erectile dysfunction, improved quality and higher count of sperm.

Abdominal Massage for Constipation

Since Abdominal Therapy gently moves the digestive organs into optimal positioning, it can improve absorption and peristalsis of the intestines. Improving peristalsis and addressing issues with absorption will naturally improve issues with constipation.

Abdominal Massage for Back Pain

Abdominal Therapy can relax the muscles, fascia, and ligaments within the pelvis, lower spine, and abdomen. Increasing relaxation and flexibility of these areas can have the added benefit of reducing back pain.

Abdominal Massage for Endometriosis

Excess estrogen can lead to endometriosis, fibroids, polyps, inflammation, and other pathologies. Abdominal Therapy can harmonize the reproductive system and improve hormonal function. This enhanced reproductive functioning reduces excess estrogen thereby improving symptoms related to endometriosis, fibroids, and other reproductive pathologies.

Abdominal Massage for Menstrual Cramps

Many individuals who menstruate may experience menstrual cramps or period pain. While some discomfort is natural, symptoms of menstruation should not be debilitating. Abdominal Therapy relaxes the muscles, ligaments, and fascia of the abdomen which can improve hormonal functioning. The relaxation of and optimal repositioning of the reproductive organs can have a positive impact on symptoms associated with menstruation including menstrual cramping or period pain.

The Treatment Experience

If you are new to our clinic, your abdominal therapist will conduct a comprehensive personal health story as a telehealth visit, and then you will be able to schedule your in-person Abdominal Therapy appointment. Returning patients can expect an abbreviated version of this health history based on the information we already have in your medical file.

Abdominal Therapy is the external massage of the abdomen, back, hips, and/or sacrum. The massage of these areas can improve the circulation of a number of body systems including blood, lymph, and energy (Chu’lel to the Maya). The Abdominal Therapy Collective calls this NAVAL: Nerve, Arterial and Venous blood, Energy, and Lymph.

We provide Abdominal Therapy in two forms: as a stand-alone appointment and as an add-on service to your acupuncture treatments.

  1. Stand-alone appointments are 60 minutes which include massage of the back, hips, sacrum, and abdomen and teaching of Your Abdominal Massage (YAM).
  2. Abdominal Therapy as an add-on service is provided over two appointments which includes only massage of the abdomen and teaching of Your Abdominal Massage (YAM). The techniques are provided for 15 minutes at the beginning of your acupuncture appointment.

Practitioners Offering Abdominal Massage

A Legacy of Healing from Dr. Rosita Arvigo and Don Elijio Panti

Building upon the wisdom of Don Elijio Panti, Dr. Rosita Arvigo created an abdominal therapy technique that has been honed and taught to other practitioners around the world. Now we have a standardized practice that combines the ancient with the scientific to create a powerful therapy for improving overall health.

Maya Abdominal Therapy

Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN lived and worked in San Ignacio, Belize where she met and began apprenticing with an old Maya H’Men (doctor/priest), Don Elijio Panti, in 1983. Don Elijio was well known throughout Central America for his abdominal massage techniques which he practiced in his village of San Antonio, Belize. Dr. Arvigo wove the threads of innate wisdom, ancient healing techniques, and her scientific knowledge to create the well-crafted gift of Abdominal Therapy (sometimes referred to as Maya Abdominal Massage).

The Abdominal Therapy Collective honors the lineage of Don Elijio Panti, Miss Hortense Robinson, Dr. Rosita Arvigo, and the healers who came before them.

Abdominal Therapy Collective

The Abdominal Therapy Collective (ATC) is a group of practitioners, healers, and bodyworkers who are passionate about Abdominal Therapy. The ATC was founded by Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN, on October 15, 2020 and is dedicated to fostering and maintaining the Maya abdominal therapy techniques taught by Don Elijio Panti, Miss Hortense Robinson, and other traditional healers. This global organization of practitioners and educators is dedicated to upholding and honoring the lineage, legacy, and tradition of Don Elijio, Miss Hortense, and Dr. Arvigo. The organization is under the stewardship of Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN.
